1. Description of innovative planning practices at Chengdu –

Journals: Planning History, Urban Design, Cities

Methods: literature review, plan analysis, planners’ survey; interview with local political leaders, developers and residents aimed at understanding how the Garden City ideas as they have been interpreted in the context of Chengdu are being perceived and re-interpreted “on the ground”

2. Description and evaluation of planning process and governance

Journals: JAPA, International Journal of Urban and Regional Planning

Research questions:  Under what conditions does the Garden city planning idea get translated in the way that achieve the original intention and principles? Regional governance, finding the balance between environment protection and urban development, leadership, right timing (disaster), resources (?) How does Chinese government finance work? What is the regional governance – structure like?

Planning process – economic planning and spatial planning integration,  informed by lessons learned and  planning knowledge (first planner to serve as the bureau chief, planners with knowledge positioned at key tasks) and willingness to learn.
